Happy Birthday Nanny! I miss you every day. I wish you were here to tell me how many cards you received for your birthday and to hear (in your voice) how proud you were that you got so many, because you were special to everyone who knew you...and to hear about Ronnie's card first because he always gave you the best card. I miss you and I love you. Kim xoxoxoxo

Dear Uncle Malcolm, Judy, David, Ronnie, Donnie and families, I just wanted to let you all know how sorry I am about Auntie Merle and how much she meant to me and how much I am going to miss her. She was truly one of a kind! She was so proud of you all, and her Grandkids and Great Grandkids. They meant everything to her. Some of my earliest memories are of time spent with her and Uncle Malcolm. They were really like a second set of Grandparents to me. Aunt Merle taught me many things both simple and practical as well as big life lessons. She taught me how to play cards (and not get caught if you were just cheating a little bit! This she learned from her Mom, Grammie Yorke I am sure.) She taught me how to dance to “An itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini”, how to wash your hair in the lake without getting shampoo in your eyes, how to play a juke box, how to play a pin ball game, how to be sure to put your thumb just inside the chamber pot when you were peeing at night so when the pee hit your thumb you knew to stop and have Uncle Malcolm empty the pot! She taught me how to be a good sister by setting an example of how kind she was to my Mom her little sister Greta. I think I have such a strong relationship with my sister Robin and brother John from watching her. She taught me how to love other people’s children as if they were your own. She adopted Ronnie and Donnie and loved them every bit as much as she loved Judy and David. I ended up adopting 3 girls without any hesitation. It just felt like a natural thing to do, so I thank her for teaching me another way to be a Mom. She taught me how to be a good daughter. She was a wonderful daughter to Grammie and Grampie Yorke. She always treated Grampie with love and respect. She even smoked in the bedroom closet as 60 year old women so as not to disappoint him! When Grammie Yorke was sick and dying of cancer Aunt Merle dropped everything and came home to be with her. These were big lessons of selflessness to learn. She taught me how to be a caring citizen. She always seemed to be doing something for someone else. She was always providing someone with a home or food or clothing. I am sure she knit more sweaters and mittens than any other human being! I was actually wearing mittens that she knit this week! Lastly, she taught me how to be a good wife. She set the bar high as did Uncle Malcolm in sticking it out together for 73 years. They were a true example of perseverance and commitment. They always just worked it out, compromised, respected and loved each other. I am going to miss her as will all of you. I do take comfort knowing she is in heaven with Grammie and Grampie Yorke and we will all meet again. Take care of each other and speak her name frequently to keep her memory alive. Love Susan xo xo

We have had the pleasure of meeting Merle and Malcom on a few occasions and had the opportunity of speaking briefly with them. Merle was a truly wonderful lady who with her equally wonderful husband accepted Don and Ron into their home and gave them much love and affection, the greatest gift parents can give. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Nanny, Thank you for being the best grandmother anyone could ask for. I will always cherish those weekends I came to visit you when I was just a little girl. You have played such an important role in who I am today. I always try to teach with an open heart, just like you had. Thank you for making me realize that at the end of the day, if you can't laugh at yourself, you will never live life to its full potential. I will miss not having you around but know you will always be with me. Miss you dearly, Jennifer xoxo

Forever grateful and forever in our hearts. The more you are blessed, the more it hurts when you lose that blessing. The luck of two little boys changed when you and Malcolm adopted us. You gave us a loving home and taught us well. We love you and will always cherish the fond memories. Love Donnie, Heidi and Matthew

Pennies from Heaven. Nanny, you collected so many pennies for me and told me that you thought of me every time you put them in the jar. Now when I put pennies in a jar I will remember you and how much you loved me. Thank you, I love you and will miss you a lot. Love Matthew

When my brother and I were 10 years old, seemed like nobody in this world wanted us. Then Merle and Malcolm found us in an orphanage , and became our parents. Everything I have, and have accomplished in my life, I owe to them. She was a great mom, and I;ll miss her dearly. Your loving son always, Ronnie
