Tim Crawford posted a condolence

It was with sadness that I read of the passing of Lillian.
My first memory of her was when I was about 7 years old and I used to hang around Bert Graham’s general store. One time, when all in the store were busy with customers and dealing with the mail, the phone rang, and someone told me to answer it. It was Lillian asking for a couple of groceries to be brought up by the rural mail delivery person (I have long forgotten that mailman’s name – it might have been Burt Guest at the time).
I relayed the message to the person behind the counter, and of course the items were delivered likely about 1 hour later, along with the Currie mail. The price of the items likely would have been entered in the counter book for “Johnnie Currie”.
This anecdote likely is so vividly remembered due to the ‘importance’ that a 7-year-old put on handling a ‘responsible task.’ The anecdote may or may not now be relevant, but it does capture a moment-in-time around 1942.
I remember Johnnie being such an outstanding softball catcher, bravely standing right up behind each batter and catching Ed Robinson’s streaking fast balls – I have no idea how he survived the ‘tipped foul-balls’ which sometimes hit him.
The Currie/Robinson pair were softball legends in Oro.
I remember him once telling me that the key or trick to ‘catching’ was to hold his glove almost over the plate such that as the bat swung by his glove, if the bat only tipped the ball, it would still go into his glove or, deflect well away from his body. He survived with only a glove – no face-mask nor padding. I am able to still see in my mind’s eye Johnnie standing up-right (not crouched down) ready to receive Ed’s missiles, and, Ed either delivering a missile, or a very slow looper that the batter swung at long before the ball went over the plate.
The process was almost ‘artistry.’
I vaguely remember ‘the girls’ attending ‘young peoples meetings’ in the village, along with the Ansdales. A number of times those of us in the village ‘walk-home’ those above the highway and then walked back to the village. I would welcome a phone call which would refresh my memory of those 'teen years'.
Part of my memory includes Robert teaching at Guthrie, and solving a problem I had with a student when I was volunteering.
Within the last 20 years I visited Lillian at Guthrie a number of times, talking about local history, particularly the families north of the highway on the 7th line. Using her sharp memory, she provided me with useful information.
We also talked on the phone a number of times.
I remember her as being an elegant lady, full of wisdom, always with a kind word. Each time I drove past Guthrie, I’d note her home and think of her. Today, on going to Barrie, I did the same – note her home and thought of her.
We all have been enriched by her presence and influence which have created a lasting legacy, not only imbued in her children and grandchildren etc., but also by her enriching all others with whom she had contact.
Her rich legacy will be cherished.
Sincerely,
Tim Crawford
