Obituary of Nathan Joel Smit
Surrounded by his family, Nathan Joel Smit “Nate”, passed away peacefully in his sleep in
Collingwood, Ontario on Tuesday, October 24th, 2023.
Nate was the youngest in the family, born to Kathie (deceased) and Gary Smit (Joanne) in
Orillia. He is survived by his Oma (Margaret Smit), siblings Laura (Rick), Becky (Albert), Kevin
(Ashley), Iain (Sherri), Kyle (James) and Kaitlyn. Cherished uncle of Kathryn and Adriaan
Andall. He will be missed by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Nate had a life-long passion for food and spent his life cooking his way through some of
Toronto's most well-known restaurants. He was happiest when he was inspired and making
heart-warming soups in the winter, piling meats for perfect sandwiches during sports games at
the pub, and creating melt-in-your mouth desserts.
He had a love for sports, music, animals, and photography. Nate played baseball, rugby, soccer,
and was always up for a pickup game with friends. His prized possession, after his chef knives,
was his acoustic guitar that accompanied him through the city. Nate loved animals, from his
hamster and the family cat as a child, to his hilarious skinny pig later in life. During COVID, Nate
refound his love for photography and shared serene photos of Toronto's city scenes.
A private ceremony will be held, in accordance with Nate’s wishes. As an expression of
sympathy, memorial donations can be made to the Georgian Triangle Humane Society
